The Baltimore Orioles are sitting at 16-32 with just over a week left in May.
The team’s record is the second worst in the American League, only a game above the lowly Chicago White Sox, who set MLB’s All-Time losses record just last season.
There isn’t much optimism that the Orioles will be able to salvage this season.
While Tony Mansolino currently holds the interim manager title, it’s expected that Orioles leadership will look to hire a new skipper this offseason.
It will be of great importance for Baltimore to land this hire, who will be expected to lead the team’s young core to new heights.
Here are five options that Baltimore could consider to be its next manager:
Buck Britton
Britton served as the manager of the Triple-A Norfolk Tides from 2022-24, and helped lead the team to the International League Championship in 2023 with a roster full of players that are currently on the Orioles’ major league roster.
The managerial experience combined with the familiarity with the team’s young talent could make Britton an intriguing option for a team looking to optimize its core.
Skip Schumaker
Schumaker served as the Miami Marlins manager from 2023-24, and even won National League Manager of the Year honors during 2023 after leading the team to an 84-78 record and a Wild Card Series appearance.
With a front office situation in flux, Schumaker entered 2024 knowing it would be his last season with the team, and currently serves as a Senior Advisor to the Texas Rangers.
Schumaker’s success with young players and background as a former player himself could lend to him having success in Baltimore.
Ryan Flaherty
The current bench coach for the Chicago Cubs, Flaherty spent a majority of his Major League career as a utility man for the Orioles from 2012-2017.
While he was a career .215 hitter, Flaherty provided defensive versatility across the diamond.
Since 2022, Flaherty has gained experience as a bench coach for both the San Diego Padres and Cubs, allowing him to get a good feel for managing a Major League club from the second-in-command position.
His familiarity with Baltimore could be a plus.
Grady Sizemore
The former Major League All-Star made his return to the big leagues as a bench coach with the Chicago White Sox in 2024, and by the end of the season, Sizemore was the interim manager of the ballclub.
While he was passed over for the full-time managerial role, the White Sox named him Offensive Coordinator for 2025, and he is considered to be an up-and-coming manager across baseball.
Sizemore’s ability to connect with players based on his MLB experience may be crucial to him having success in the role.
Brian Roberts
A bit of a wild card on this list is Baltimore fan favorite Brian Roberts.
The former All-Star second baseman has no coaching experience, but has served as a part time color analyst since his retirement in 2014.
His father, Mike Roberts, was the head coach of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels for 20 seasons, so he has a tie to the coaching world.
While it would be an unconventional selection, Roberts combination of Major League experience and familiarity with Baltimore could give him the ability to connect with players while also exciting the fanbase.
The Orioles will travel to Boston to take on the Red Sox in a weekend series.
