The Philadelphia Phillies are adjusting to life without left-handed starter Ranger Suarez, as he took a deal with the Boston Red Sox in the offseason.
Veteran catcher J.T. Realmuto recently shared his thoughts on what he brought to the mound and the team as a whole.
Suarez had been a steady presence in Philadelphia’s rotation, known for his ability to get outs at the highest level. Now with the Red Sox, Realmuto made it known that Boston is getting a pitcher who does just about everything a team could ask for.
“Everything you want in a starting pitcher: mixes his pitches well, he’s able to throw five or six pitches for strikes, hit both sides of the plate with everything. (Boston) will really grow to love how calm he looks on the mound all the time,” he said, per the Boston Globe.
I questioned why the Phillies let Suarez walk when it happened and I’m still unsure if it makes sense. I get he was expensive, but the questions with Zack Wheeler are too loud for me to say the decision was a smart one.
For Boston, Suarez’s presence should provide an elite arm in the rotation. With Suarez and Garrett Crochet, a lefty-heavy lineup has about a 0% chance of winning much against the Red Sox when it comes to October.
Philadelphia, meanwhile, will now look for other arms to step up and fill the role once held by the ex-fan favorite.
