Broncos land rugby star, secure Teitzel

The Broncos have secured the services of Stacey Waaka, a prominent figure in New Zealand rugby, for the upcoming 2024 season. With an illustrious career that includes two Rugby World Cup triumphs, participation in the 2020 Olympics, and representation in both the 2018 Commonwealth Games and Sevens World Cup, Waaka brings a wealth of experience to the Brisbane club.

Despite her commitment to the Paris Olympics later this year, Waaka is poised to join the Broncos under the leadership of Scott Prince post the Olympic event. Expressing a mix of nerves and excitement about joining a club known for its past successes, Waaka is eager for the new challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. She acknowledges the strong support she anticipates receiving from the club as she transitions into her new role after the conclusion of the Olympics.

In addition to Waaka’s signing, the Broncos have also secured Romy Teitzel on a new three-year deal, ensuring the Queensland representative forward remains with the club until at least the end of the 2027 NRL Telstra Women’s Premiership campaign. Teitzel, who returned to the Broncos last year for her second stint, adds further depth to the team’s roster.

Elsewhere in the league, Mahalia Murphy has extended her contract with the Eels and committed to a two-year deal with the club. Murphy, recognized with the NRLW Coaches Award last season, continues her journey with the Eels after an impressive return to rugby league.

Meanwhile, the Sharks have bolstered their squad with the addition of Pia Tapsell, a rugby union forward from New Zealand. Tapsell, with six Test appearances for the Black Ferns in 2019, joins Cronulla for the 2024 and 2025 NRLW seasons. After recovering from an ACL injury, Tapsell will feature for the Western Force in the Super W before transitioning to the NRLW with the Sharks in July.
