Leeds United are navigating a transformative summer, with substantial player movements reshaping their squad. Having bid farewell to Crysencio Summerville, who joined West Ham for a fee exceeding £30 million, and with Georginio Rutter’s imminent transfer to Brighton, Leeds are on track to accumulate an impressive £120 million from player sales. This financial influx follows the departures of Archie Gray, Glen Kamara, Charlie Cresswell, and three other players.
Following Leeds’ recent 0-0 draw against West Brom, manager Daniel Farke publicly expressed his desire for two new attacking players to fill the void left by Summerville and Rutter. One player who has emerged as a potential target is Norwich City’s Josh Sargent, currently valued at £19.3 million by The Canaries. The American forward’s impressive performances have drawn considerable attention, not just from Leeds but also from FC Cincinnati, who have made a £15.5 million offer. However, Norwich’s valuation remains higher, with a reported asking price of around £25 million.
Tom Bogert, an American reporter for The Athletic, revealed on Instagram that FC Cincinnati is keen on both Sargent and Weston McKennie. Bogert stated, “Sources: Inside FC Cincinnati’s pursuit of Weston McKennie, Josh Sargent & German Berterame. McKennie chase for months. Sargent bid of $20m. Norwich want $25m+. Pursuit is still active for winter.” This indicates ongoing competition for Sargent’s signature, adding complexity to Leeds’ pursuit.
Sargent, who was signed by Farke during his tenure at Norwich, has been a standout performer. Farke has previously praised Sargent’s contributions, noting, “His workload was unbelievable both with and against the ball. He was able to keep the ball in the pocket and also against a difficult back three of Brighton.” Such endorsements underline Farke’s strong affinity for Sargent, making him a prime candidate for Leeds as they seek to bolster their attacking options.
Leeds have also shown interest in other Norwich players, including Gabriel Sara. However, Sara’s move to Galatasaray for a fee exceeding £20 million has complicated matters. Jonathan Rowe remains a target, but with Sargent now rated as an expensive option, Leeds face a challenging decision in their pursuit of new talent.
