Tom Cannon, the 21-year-old forward, is currently one of the few out-and-out centre forwards at Leicester. Despite this, it appears that manager Steve Cooper does not see the youngster as a key figure in his plans, having left him out of the squad against Fulham recently. Cannon, who joined Leicester from Everton last year for a fee of £7 million, has found game time limited, struggling to establish himself amid competition from established names like Jamie Vardy, Patson Daka, and the recently departed Kelechi Iheanacho.
Nixon’s report, shared via his Patreon, suggests that Leicester is keen to recoup the amount they initially invested in Cannon by seeking a similar £7 million fee for his sale. This has sparked interest from Championship sides Sheffield United and Stoke City, who are both trying to raise the necessary funds to facilitate a move. Sheffield United, who are reportedly finalizing a takeover, initially hoped to secure Cannon on loan to bolster their promotion push. However, they are now contemplating a loan-to-buy offer. Stoke City, long-term admirers of Cannon, also remain in the race but may hesitate to commit to an outright purchase immediately.
Despite still having four years left on his contract, Cannon is eager to play regular football and is reportedly waiting for the right opportunity to further his career. The young forward made an impression during a loan spell at Preston North End in the 2022/23 season, which convinced Leicester to acquire him from Everton. His time at Leicester, however, has not gone as planned, managing just two league goals in a challenging first season. This has led some to speculate whether Leicester is making a premature decision to cash in on the promising talent.
Critics argue that offloading Cannon could be a shortsighted move by Leicester. At just 21, Cannon still has time to develop and refine his game. His performances at Preston, including a standout game against Reading in April 2023, have shown glimpses of his potential.
