The idea was discussed at the F1 Commission meeting ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix. The concept would give rookie drivers with two or fewer starts an opportunity to step into F1 machinery and race in a televised sprint. The event would be held after the post-season tyre test that takes place annually in the aftermath of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Currently, young drivers are heavily limited when it comes to private testing with only two-year-old cars available to drive in strictly-regulated sessions. Teams must also offer rookies two FP1 sessions per season. However, this isn’t enough to prepare them for life in F1 as full-time racers.
According to a report from Motorsport.com , following positive conversations at the most recent F1 Commission meeting, the post-season sprint is expected to get the green light at next month’s congregation. If approved, the event could be hosted on the Tuesday after the Abu Dhabi event.
