Villa’s goalless start makes them only the fifth team in Premier League history to begin a campaign without finding the back of the net across the first four fixtures. The others to endure this fate include Sheffield Wednesday in 1993-94, Newcastle United in 2005-06, Swansea City in 2011-12, and Crystal Palace in 2017-18.
For many fans, Villa’s struggles are particularly shocking given their attacking firepower and the expectations surrounding them after a strong finish last season. Despite boasting big names in their frontline, the Midlands side have looked blunt and frustrated in front of goal, leaving supporters worried about where the spark will come from.
Football historian Mark Glover highlighted the rarity of this statistic: “It’s not often we see top-flight sides go four games without scoring. To do so in today’s Premier League, with the money and talent on show, makes it even more remarkable. Villa have equalled a record they’ll want to forget quickly.”
Sheffield Wednesday fans, meanwhile, have reacted with mixed emotions on social media. Some recalled the painful memories of the club’s 1993-94 campaign, which ended in mid-table obscurity, while others cheekily welcomed Villa to what they dubbed “the drought club.”
