Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet shared his thoughts following his side’s victory over Castleford Tigers on Saturday night.
The Warriors managed another last-ditch attempt to secure a 26-20 win but there was controversy regarding a captain’s challenge call.
A pullback from Wigan’s Harry Smith on the Tigers winger Josh Simm was missed by the video referee, and subsequently, Wigan scored on the following set.
Peet spoke to Sky Sports after the match and shared his view on the incident and how his side reacted.
He said: “There are that many of these kinds of things in the game at the moment, as in I’m not sure what I’m seeing, so I don’t want to pass judgment.
“It may be controversial, but a few things went against us as well. We’re trying not to dwell on those moments.
“We’ll worry about our own performance. Maybe we were fortunate, but I’m not sure.”
Before last week’s loss against Wakefield Trinity, the Warriors scored in the final play against Huddersfield Giants to claim the win earlier in the month.
Whilst the Wigan Warriors boss wasn’t thrilled with his side’s performance, the two points matter much more at this point of the season.
On finding a way to win late on again, he said: “Yeah, we have. I’m really proud of the players, the way they came back at the end. There’s no doubt we did some poor things at times, some things went against us, but I can’t knock the result.
“We need to improve, and that’s our job. We’ve got a lot of work to do and find our best form.”
That win closed the gap back to four points to league leaders Hull KR, who have arguably been putting in better performances than Wigan in recent weeks.
However, Peet is focused solely on his side and fixing what needs to be done in order to improve on the pitch.
He said: “I don’t know if it’s because other teams are playing well or maybe we’re not as good as people think, but there’s certainly been a lot of competitive games.
“We’ve had a real glut of away games, which brings its challenges, but we’re enjoying it, we’re learning all the time and trying to get better.
“We’re far from perfect, we’re far from our best but we enjoy the journey. We’re learning, we’re developing, I’m learning all the time.
“We just want to get better and we can keep improving with the squad that we’ve got and the support of the fans at the club.
“We’ll be tough to beat on our day, so we don’t worry too much about a particular team. Hull KR have done a fantastic job; they’re a very good team. We saw what Castleford put on today; they were excellent. No matter who we play or talk about, it’s about us finding our best rugby.”
The Wigan Warriors coach also wanted to highlight captain Liam Farrell on his 350th Super League appearance, as well as a trio of youngsters, who’ve stepped up in recent weeks.
He finished: “You look at some of those players in there, particularly our two wingers and Jack Farrimond, what we are doing is developing some young players along the way and picking up wins more often than not.
“On the other side, I’m just delighted for Liam Farrell to get that mention because he’s deserved it. He works so hard, he spoke so well recently to the team, and it’s a privilege to even coach him.”
