As the 2024 Formula 1 season enters its final stretch, the title race is intensifying with Max Verstappen maintaining a commanding lead. Despite a formidable partnership between McLaren and Lando Norris, doubts have been cast on Norris’ ability to close the gap and challenge Verstappen for the championship. According to Williams driver Alex Albon, the odds of Norris overtaking the reigning champion are slim.
Currently, Norris trails Verstappen by 78 points with only ten races remaining in the season. This considerable deficit presents a significant challenge, especially given the consistent performance of Verstappen and the Red Bull team. While McLaren has demonstrated impressive speed throughout the season, their campaign has been marred by inconsistency and strategic errors, which have hindered their quest for the title.
McLaren’s setbacks have contributed to a widening gap between Norris and Verstappen, though the team has seen some success. Notably, McLaren’s second driver, Oscar Piastri, has been performing strongly, and the team has managed to reduce the deficit in the Constructors’ Championship to just 42 points. This positive development reflects McLaren’s potential but also highlights the uphill battle they face in closing the gap to Red Bull.
Albon, reflecting on the current state of play, expressed skepticism about Norris’ chances of bridging the gap to Verstappen. “I don’t know how much I believe Lando can take it off Max,” Albon told RacingNews365. “I look at it more like a Constructors’ Championship battle than a Drivers’ Championship battle. I think that what’s great to see is just purely there’s a fight.”
The 2024 season has been marked by a shift in the competitive landscape of Formula 1. Red Bull’s dominance under the ground effect regulations has been challenged by multiple teams. McLaren, with two wins to their name this year, is among those leading the charge. Ferrari, showing competitive form earlier in the season, and a revitalized Mercedes team, which has secured three wins in the four races leading up to the summer break, have all contributed to a more dynamic championship battle.
Albon acknowledged the refreshing change in competition at the front of the grid. “I think last year, and the last few years, it’s always been the midfield battles that have created any form of racing,” he said. “And now it’s actually the top teams are the ones that are creating the fighting, which is great to see.”
As Norris and Verstappen navigate the pressures of the championship battle, Albon noted the differences in their experiences. “It’s interesting, obviously, Max has been in his position many times. For Lando, it’s newer for him,” he observed. Albon’s own experiences on the track give him a unique perspective on the challenges both drivers face.
Despite the challenges, Albon expressed enthusiasm about the competitive nature of the season. “But yeah, I mean, obviously, I’m busy driving my car, but at the same time, when the blue flags do come up, it’s good to see the battles,” he concluded. As the season progresses, the fight for the title remains fiercely contested, with McLaren and Norris continuing their pursuit of the championship amidst a highly competitive field.
