After three consecutive losses, the Washington Capitals defeated the Boston Bruins 4-3 at the TD Garden on April 1, during which Alex Ovechkin score his 891st career goal.
The following day, the Capitals traveled to take on the Carolina Hurricanes on April 2. Carolina entered the Metropolitan Divisional showdown a 9-game win streak, and they got off to a dominant start against Washington.
With the Hurricanes up 4-0 in the second period, Ovechkin ended the shutout, scoring goal 892 on a power play. The 39-year-old left wing is now just three goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record.
Ovechkin, just two goals away from tying Gretzky’s record, seems destined to reach hockey immortality before the regular season ends, as they have seven more games left.
Amid the excitement, Ovechkin’s wife, Anastasia Shubskaya, who goes by Nastasiya or Nastya, traveled from Boston to North Carolina to watch the Capitals-Hurricanes game in person. After Ovechkin scored, the cameras captured her reaction.
Anastasia, who shares two sons with Ovechkin, Sergei and Ilya, rocked a black No. 8 hat. She high-fived Capitals owner Ten Leonsis and shook hands the NHL commissioner Gary Bettman while celebrating her husband’s latest goal.
The NHL announced on Wednesday, “Ovechkin scored a goal on consecutive days for the 60th time in his regular season career, becoming the fifth player in League history to achieve that feat.”

While Ovechkin doesn’t like to talk about being on the brink of NHL history, his teammates have no issue speaking on the topic.
“It’s unbelievable,” Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren said. “And I think that’s selling it short, how just incredible this journey has been. Go back to when he was injured and out for a while. When that happened, I think everyone was thinking to themselves whether or not it was going to be possible. But anything is possible with Alex Ovechkin, and we’ve seen that this far.”
