The rugby league world has been left buzzing after the revelation that Jim Lenihan, the highly respected Gold Coast Titans coach, narrowly missed out on the head coach position at Castleford Tigers despite making it to the final round of interviews.
Lenihan, 51, was reportedly devastated by the decision, according to his agent Ben Moore, who confirmed that the Australian coach had high hopes of securing the role. Moore described the disappointment as “gut-wrenching,” particularly after Lenihan had invested time and energy into multiple rounds of interviews.
“Jim is gutted. He gave everything in those interviews, showed his vision, and really believed he could bring something special to Castleford,” Moore explained. “It’s a bitter pill to swallow, especially after getting so far in the process.”
Ultimately, Castleford opted for Ryan Carr, who edged out Lenihan to land his first Super League coaching job. The decision has sparked mixed emotions among fans, with many acknowledging Lenihan’s impressive résumé and questioning how close he came to transforming Castleford’s future.
Lenihan is no stranger to challenges or success in rugby league. Born in 1973, he built a distinguished career as both player and coach. After stepping into coaching, he guided the Bilambil Jets to the Bycroft Cup in 2011 and later returned to the Burleigh Bears where he cemented his legacy. Under his leadership, the Bears clinched the Queensland Cup Grand Final titles in 2016 and 2019, victories that remain standout moments in his coaching career.
In 2019, Lenihan joined the Gold Coast Titans as an assistant coach and quickly established himself as a sharp tactical mind. When Justin Holbrook departed in June 2023, Lenihan was promoted to interim head coach, steering the Titans through a turbulent period. His ability to stabilize the team during that difficult time enhanced his reputation as a steady hand under pressure.
For many, it seemed only a matter of time before a Super League club came calling. That opportunity appeared to arrive with Castleford Tigers. The club, in search of fresh leadership, held extensive talks with several candidates. Moore insists Lenihan left a lasting impression on the panel.
“The feedback Jim received was overwhelmingly positive. They loved his ideas, his experience, and his passion for player development. He genuinely thought he had done enough,” Moore said.
But as fate would have it, Castleford chose Ryan Carr, whose youthful energy and vision for the club reportedly tipped the balance.
Despite the setback, Moore was keen to stress that Lenihan remains fully focused on his duties with the Gold Coast Titans.
> “Jim’s disappointed, yes, but he’s also resilient. He knows this is not the end of the road. His track record speaks for itself, and another big opportunity will come,” he added.
For Castleford Tigers, the appointment of Ryan Carr marks the beginning of a new era. But for Jim Lenihan, the story is far from over. A proven winner with the Bears and an experienced coach in the NRL, his moment in Super League may simply be a matter of time.
