Melbourne Vixens’ wing defence Kate Eddy lit up the Mildura Spring Carnival on Sunday as she made her first ever trip to the region, bringing along the coveted Suncorp Super Netball Cup. The event, which drew over 600 netballers and 63 teams from Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia, was already buzzing with excitement, but Eddy’s presence turned it into something unforgettable.
For Eddy, the visit was more than just a trophy tour. “I’ve heard so much about Mildura, but being here in person and seeing the passion for netball at a grassroots level is really special,” she said, smiling as young players crowded around for photos. “This is what the game is all about—connecting communities and inspiring the next generation.”
The 27-year-old defender, a key part of the Vixens’ championship-winning squad, carried the silverware proudly through the precinct. Players and families couldn’t hide their excitement at seeing one of their heroes up close. “To have Kate here, holding that cup, it makes winning the carnival feel even bigger,” said local player Maddie Clarke, 14. “It makes me believe we can get to that level one day too.”
Officials were equally thrilled. A Mildura Netball Association representative remarked: “Moments like this remind us that netball isn’t just for the big cities. When a premiership player like Kate Eddy takes the time to visit, it shows our kids that their efforts on these courts are valued.”
Eddy spent the day signing autographs, sharing stories of the Vixens’ triumphant season, and offering encouragement to players who lined up just to get a handshake. She also took part in short skill demonstrations, delighting young defenders eager to copy her style. “I wanted to show them that the fundamentals are the same whether you’re in Mildura or Melbourne,” she said. “Hard work, discipline, and enjoying the game—that’s what carries you forward.”
For many, it was the first time they had seen the Super Netball Cup in person. Parents snapped photos while younger players held the trophy with wide eyes. “This is history coming to Mildura,” said one supporter.
As the sun set on the carnival, Eddy reflected on the experience. “I’ll remember today for a long time. The smiles, the energy, the love for netball—it’s why we play. Hopefully, I can come back again soon.”
Her visit not only brought the sparkle of championship success to Mildura but also left behind a deeper message: the dreams of tomorrow’s stars often begin on courts just like these.
