Los Angeles Chargers Re-Sign S Alohi Gilman

Alohi Gilman has decided to continue his football journey in Los Angeles, as the Chargers have officially confirmed his re-signing. This new deal entails multiple years for the free agent safety, marking a significant commitment between the player and the team.

Originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Gilman fulfilled his rookie contract with the Chargers, showcasing his talents across 57 games. Over the course of four seasons, he progressively shouldered more defensive responsibilities. His evolution reached its peak during the 2023 season, where he started in all 14 games he participated in, logging a career-high 928 defensive snaps. However, a heel injury sidelined him for three games during that period.

His performance in the 2023 season was commendable, notching 73 tackles, three forced fumbles, and securing two interceptions. Pro Football Focus lauded his contributions, ranking him seventh among 95 qualifying safeties. Particularly noteworthy was his coverage ability, earning him the fifth-highest score in his position.

Despite undergoing a transition in coaching staff for the 2024 season, the Chargers find solace in the continuity of their secondary lineup. Gilman and Derwin James Jr. are set to resume their roles atop the depth chart as the team’s safety duo. Gilman, in particular, expresses optimism for the upcoming season, anticipating a revitalization within the organization.

In reflecting on his journey, Gilman embraces his underdog narrative and seeks to redefine the Chargers’ status. He views himself as a valuable asset in this pursuit of transformation. Gilman also expresses admiration for Coach Harbaugh’s infectious energy, highlighting the coach’s pivotal role in fostering a positive team atmosphere. Grateful for the opportunity to continue his career with the Chargers, Gilman acknowledges his blessings and eagerly anticipates the challenges ahead.
