As Dejphon Chansiri looks for solutions to his financial troubles at Sheffield Wednesday, the club’s owner is now turning to desperate measures.
All summer, the headlines have been dominated by Sheffield Wednesday’s issues behind the scenes, with players going unpaid and EFL punishments aplenty.
With the club now under a three-window transfer ban, it’s unlikely we will see many players heading into Hillsborough this summer.
There is still hope that a takeover could be completed, with progress made in the last few days including Dejphon Chansiri signing an NDA; something he had previously been reluctant to do.
Whether he does sell up and move on or not remains to be seen, but fans will be even more desperate for Chansiri to go as soon as possible in light of news of his latest plans.
As per a report from Alan Nixon on Patreon, Chansiri is now planning to start a ‘fire sale’ at the club in order to raise funds and try to appease the HMRC while also paying the players who are staying at Wednesday.
Both Pierce Charles and Djeidi Gassama are cited as players that would be available for sale this summer. It is said certain higher-value players have been paid their salary for June in order to avoid the risk of losing them for nothing.
It’s worth remembering, any player who has not been paid for the last two months can hand in their notice and move on for free. As many as six stars are thought to be pursuing that path.
With the sale of the club stalling for one reason or another, it’s said Chansiri is left with ‘few options’ to remedy the situation, and selling players is now his next course of action.
The report adds that Gassama could be sold for around £2.5m, with Blackburn Rovers interested. Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur have previously looked at Charles.
With the Owls unable to pay a fee for any new signings, they’ll be relying on free agents and loan deals to bring in new players this summer.
Thinking about replacing Pierce Charles is not something many fans will want to consider, but there are options out there. Angus Gunn was just released by Norwich City, and could bring experience to the role, while Josh Keeley at Tottenham Hotspur would be a brilliant option on loan.
Finding an exciting winger on a free is a lot more difficult, unless the Owls were willing to break the bank to offer Tyrhys Dolan a big contract (that’s never going to happen).
Instead, they’d be better off looking at loan deals. Tyrique George at Chelsea will be a wanted man this summer and could certainly fill the void left behind by Gassama, while Rio Ngumoha would be a bit more of a gamble if the Owls wanted to try and pick up the 16-year-old Liverpool starlet.
