Sheffield Wednesday could be forced to turn to the free agent market in a bid to strengthen their depleted squad as the battle for Championship survival heats up.
Head coach Henrik Pedersen has faced a difficult start to the 2025/26 campaign, with financial troubles under owner Dejphon Chansiri severely restricting business in the summer window. The Owls managed only two incoming deals — loan moves for Manchester United youngster Harry Amass and Cardiff City goalkeeper Ethan Horvath.
Now, with injuries mounting and a threadbare squad, Wednesday are actively exploring the free agent market — and discussions are already underway with three experienced names who could provide an immediate boost.
Among them is Duncan Watmore, a Sunderland academy graduate who netted five goals in 29 appearances for Millwall last season. At 31, his energy and versatility could add much-needed depth out wide.
Another target is seasoned defender Craig Dawson. With Di’Shon Bernard sidelined long-term, the Owls’ options at centre-back are worryingly thin. Dawson, 35, may no longer be at his Premier League peak, but his 16 years of top-level experience could prove invaluable to both the backline and the club’s younger players.
Finally, the club are weighing up a move for former Sunderland striker Connor Wickham, who has previously enjoyed a successful loan spell at Hillsborough. The 32-year-old, currently part of the PFA free agent squad, may not have hit double figures in recent years, but his physical presence and knack for big moments could help ease Wednesday’s lack of goals following the departures of Josh Windass and Michael Smith.
While nothing has yet been finalised, Pedersen will be desperate for reinforcements — and if the EFL grants approval, these three familiar names could soon be wearing blue and white once again.
