Brighton & Hove Albion’s new manager, Fabian Hurzeler, is basking in the glow of a stellar debut after guiding his side to a commanding 3-0 victory over Everton on the opening day of the 2024/25 Premier League season. At just 31 years old, Hurzeler’s arrival marks him as potentially the youngest permanent Premier League manager in history, drawing immediate comparisons to some of the most revered names in football management, such as Jurgen Klopp and Julian Nagelsmann.
Hurzeler, who took the helm at Brighton following Roberto De Zerbi’s departure, is quickly becoming the talk of the Premier League. His first match showcased a tactical acumen and a vibrant attacking style that have already earned him praise and comparisons to German coaching luminaries. However, despite the early praise and high expectations, Hurzeler remains grounded and focused on the long journey ahead.
“It is flattering to be compared with such esteemed coaches,” Hurzeler said in a recent interview. “But I understand that they have achieved things that are at a different level. Jurgen Klopp, Julian Nagelsmann, and Thomas Tuchel have all won numerous titles in Europe’s top leagues. Hurzeler’s managerial career began to garner attention during his tenure with German club St. Pauli, where he led the team to first place in the 2. Bundesliga last season. His success there drew comparisons to Nagelsmann, who famously took over Hoffenheim at the age of 28 and made an immediate impact. For Hurzeler, the influence of his German counterparts is undeniable, yet he emphasizes the importance of carving out his own path.
“The most crucial aspect is to have a unique philosophy and style of play,” Hurzeler noted. “As a young coach, I see learning as a continuous process. I draw inspiration from the incredible talent in German football, and while Klopp, Tuchel, and Nagelsmann have been instrumental in shaping my understanding, my focus remains on developing my approach and adapting what I learn to my own team.”
Despite being the youngest Premier League manager, Hurzeler does not see age as a limiting factor. He acknowledges that Ryan Mason holds the record for the youngest person to manage a Premier League game, but Hurzeler’s own achievement of becoming Brighton’s manager at a young age is noteworthy. Rather than dwelling on age or external perceptions, he emphasizes the importance of focusing on the process and performance.
“I am not concerned with my age because it is something I cannot change,” Hurzeler explained. “What I can influence is our work with the team and our approach to each game. My aim is to concentrate on the process, and I believe that focusing on what we can control will lead to success.”
