Emma Raducanu Makes Triumphant Return to Centre Court, Defeats Renata Zarazua in Wimbledon First Round
British tennis star Emma Raducanu made a successful return to Centre Court on Monday, defeating lucky loser Renata Zarazua in the first round of Wimbledon with a score of 7-6(0), 6-3. This marks Raducanu’s first match at the All England Club since 2022, when she was eliminated in the second round.
Raducanu, 21, was absent from last year’s Wimbledon due to injuries in her wrist and ankle that required surgery. Despite a difficult match against Zarazua, she demonstrated her strength and determination to win. Raducanu will face off against Belgian player Elise Mertens in the next round.

The Mexican player, ranked 98th in the world, proved to be a formidable opponent for Raducanu. Zarazua’s unorthodox style and reliance on drop shots and lobs kept Raducanu off balance for much of the match. Despite struggling with Zarazua’s tactics, Raducanu showed her resilience and major pedigree by taking the match in straight sets.
The first set was a closely contested affair, with Raducanu ultimately prevailing in a flawless tiebreak. The British player’s powerful groundstrokes and aggressive play allowed her to take control of the match, and she sealed the victory with a delicate angled forehand.

After the match, Raducanu acknowledged the difficulty of the match, stating, “I don’t think I’ve played a defender who has literally landed the ball on the baseline, she just kept getting the ball back.” She also expressed her gratitude for the support of the home crowd, saying, “Thanks to everyone for getting me over the line.”
The young tennis star also drew inspiration from England’s football team, saying, “Honestly, watching the football last night, it was like ‘winning ugly,’ it all counts!” Raducanu’s win marks an important milestone in her return to competitive tennis, and she will look to build on this momentum in her next match against Mertens.
