coach Graeme Murty says he will continue to work with the under-21s next season after a stint with the senior team. Murty has led the under-21s team since being appointed head of professional development phase in 2022, but he also worked with the senior squad during the 2023/24 season, assisting interim head coach Mike Dodds. During that time, Murty continued to coach Sunderland’s under-21s, leading them to the Premier League 2 final before being defeated 3-1 by Tottenham.

When asked about his role for next season after the match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Murty responded: “I’m going to be doing my job, so until I’m told otherwise, I’m looking after these guys.” I enjoy working with this group. “Myself and my staff have developed a connection with these players in which we can be constructively critical while also being honest with them about where they need to improve, and they respond very well. They are really good at holding one another accountable.
“Looking at that bunch, I couldn’t be happier with what they’ve accomplished this year. I have truly loved dealing with them.” Prior to joining Sunderland, Murty was in command of Rangers’ first team, first as a caretaker manager before being appointed until the conclusion of the 2017/18 season.
When asked if he would consider returning to first-team management in the future, the former Reading defender said, “I’m not thinking about it. I appreciate working with the first team when asked. I appreciate the diverse challenges, but I really enjoy working with the under-21s. I’m just making sure I have my ducks in a row when it comes to these athletes’ futures. I have a significant obligation to ensure that next season is more developmentally successful than this season.
“That is a problem since this season has been very good, but we must consider and reflect on the entire plan, not just the games programme. We must ensure that they get the necessary experiences to continue to grow. “That’s all I’m thinking about right now.”
