Fears of a prolonged legal battle involving Sheffield Wednesday and the English Football League have now been eased, after reports confirmed that former club owner Dejphon Chansiri has decided not to appeal his ban or take the club and the EFL to court.
Earlier in the week, concerns grew rapidly among Wednesday supporters following Chansiri’s public threats to challenge the decision that banned him from owning or directing another EFL club for the next three years. Many feared that such action could further destabilise a club already navigating a delicate period following administration and ownership uncertainty.
However, DAZN Sports has now confirmed that Chansiri has had a change of heart. According to the report, the former owner has chosen to step back from any legal proceedings, ruling out both an appeal of his ban and any court action against Sheffield Wednesday or the EFL.
Sources close to Chansiri state that the decision was taken “out of respect for Sheffield Wednesday and its supporters,” with the former owner said to have recognised the potential damage that a drawn-out legal dispute could cause to the club’s recovery.
A spokesperson familiar with the situation reportedly said:
“Mr Chansiri understands the emotions around the club and does not wish to be a further distraction. He believes stepping away completely is the best course of action for Sheffield Wednesday moving forward.”
Chansiri’s ban, which prevents him from owning another football club for three years, remains firmly in place. While controversial, the ruling was designed to draw a line under a turbulent chapter in the club’s recent history — one marked by financial strain, governance concerns, and growing fan unrest.
Reaction from the Wednesday fanbase has been largely one of relief. On social media, one supporter wrote, “This is the best news we’ve had in weeks. The club needs peace, not more court drama.” Another added, “Whatever people think of Chansiri, stepping away now is the right decision for Wednesday.”
