As the 2025 Formula 1 season looms, the most talked-about seat on the grid is undoubtedly the one potentially vacated by Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes. While the possibility of Hamilton’s departure has generated immense speculation, the seat itself has only grown more attractive as Mercedes has gradually returned to being regular race winners. The question now is, who will take over the coveted seat, and could we witness a seismic shift in the F1 landscape?
With Esteban Ocon confirmed to join Haas for 2025, there are now five drivers on the current grid without a confirmed seat for the upcoming season: Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen, Daniel Ricciardo, Logan Sargeant, and Zhou Guanyu. Each of these drivers brings their own set of skills and experience to the table, but there are also talented drivers off the grid who might be even more appealing to Mercedes.
Mercedes, with their sights firmly set on contending for both championship titles in 2025 and beyond, needs a driver who can handle the pressure of competing against the best. This includes not only rivals like Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren but also George Russell, who has proven himself to be a formidable competitor within the team.
Among the established drivers, Valtteri Bottas stands out as a potential candidate. Having spent five seasons with Mercedes from 2017 to 2021, Bottas played a crucial role in securing multiple Constructors’ Championship titles for the team. While he may not have matched Hamilton’s level of performance, Bottas has shown he can challenge the best on his day. While Vesti has shown promise in Formula 2, Mick Schumacher’s tumultuous tenure with Haas raises doubts about his readiness for a Mercedes seat.
Another intriguing possibility is Andrea Kimi Antonelli, a 17-year-old sensation in Formula 2. Hailed as a generational talent, Antonelli has recently quieted critics with two race wins. However, despite his potential, it may be too soon for him to step into Hamilton’s shoes.
Among other former Mercedes affiliates, Nyck de Vries, the 2021 Formula E World Champion, could be considered, though his brief and troubled stint with AlphaTauri in 2023 might work against him. Paul Aron, a standout rookie in Formula 2, could also be a dark horse, though he lacks a current F1 affiliation.
Perhaps the most tantalizing prospect of all is Max Verstappen. While he is currently under a lucrative contract with Red Bull until 2028, rumors persist that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff would love to bring the reigning triple World Champion to his team. The idea of Verstappen replacing Hamilton at Mercedes would send shockwaves through the F1 world. However, it would be a risky move for Verstappen, given Red Bull’s recent dominance and the uncertainty surrounding the new power units set to debut in 2026.
