Harrison Butker, the Kansas City Chiefs kicker, reaffirmed his commitment to the controversial remarks he made at Benedictine College, where he delivered a speech containing sexist, homophobic, and transphobic statements. During a press conference at the Chiefs’ training camp, Butker emphasized that he carefully considered his words and prayed before making the speech, stating, “I’m going to stand behind what I’m saying.”
Butker’s comments sparked significant outrage in May after he claimed that women are happiest when confined to traditional domestic roles and criticized the LGBTQ community, dismissing Pride Month as a celebration of what he called “deadly sins” rather than true, God-centered pride.
Despite the backlash, the Chiefs recently rewarded Butker with a four-year, $25.6 million contract, making him the highest-paid kicker in the NFL. Butker defended his speech, asserting that he was speaking out about what he believes to be crucial. Unlike those who might keep bigoted views to themselves to avoid harming others, Butker feels compelled to share his opinions publicly, even if they include derogatory remarks about women and the LGBTQ community.
He attempted to soften the impact of his statements by claiming that, despite the offensive nature of his words, he still loves those he criticizes. “I want people to know that no matter what I say — it might be the complete opposite of you — I’m still going to love you no matter what your opinions are, no matter how different we may be,” he said. “I’m going to love you, and we’re going to get along and probably be good friends.”
Butker, a father of three, has two children, including at least one boy and one girl. One can only hope that if any of his children are gay, they won’t be subjected to their father’s overt homophobia.
