Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on the transfer of Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper, Murphy Cooper, following his Barnsley exit.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper has been practically ever-present for the Tykes this season, playing 28 games across all competitions – including 90 minutes against Liverpool on Monday night.
That clash at Anfield proved to be his last in Red, though, with it being confirmed on Thursday that his time at Oakwell was coming to an end. It’s thought that the Owls have moved quickly, and The Star understands that terms have been agreed in principle that – if completed – would see him join Wednesday until the end of the season. Henrik Pedersen and his side have been desperately looking for a new goalkeeper following the news that Pierce Charles would face up to two months out with a shoulder injury, and it looks like they may have found their man.
The Star is led to believe that Pedersen and the Owls are hopeful of finalising a deal in time for Cooper to make his debut on Saturday against Portsmouth, with a deadline of 12pm on Friday being the cutoff in order for him to do so.
Pedersen explained that, even though he did well on his debut against Brentford, Logan Stretch was not yet ready to be a first team regular at S6, hence the decision to go looking for a new shot-stopper with a bit more experience.
As per the Owls manager’s explanation earlier today, Cooper will take up one of the two loan spots that have been allowed by the English Football League, leaving Pedersen just one place to fill with an outfield player as they seek to bolster their threadbare ranks over in South Yorkshire.
