Following Castleford Tigers’ crushing defeat at the hands of St Helens, former rugby league star and pundit Jon Wilkin has once again raised concerns about the direction of the club—this time calling it a “matter of urgency” for the board to act decisively.
St Helens delivered a commanding performance, brushing aside Castleford in a manner that left many fans stunned. But not Wilkin. The ex-St Helens forward insists he saw this coming long ago—and he believes Castleford are now reaping the consequences of poor leadership and delayed decision-making.
“I’ve said it time and time again—something hasn’t been right at Castleford for a while,” Wilkin stated during his post-match analysis. “And as usual, people think I’m just targeting their club or trying to stir things up. But that’s not the case. I genuinely want to see this team back on its feet. Unfortunately, it’s going in the opposite direction.”
Wilkin went on to recall his earlier criticism of the team when Danny McGuire was still at the helm, pointing out that despite poor results, there appeared to be little pressure from the boardroom or urgency to turn things around.
“When McGuire was still in charge, the writing was on the wall,” he added. “I asked back then why there wasn’t more pressure on him after a string of bad results. It was clear that the team was heading into chaos—and now, sadly, that chaos is on full display.”
The former player was blunt in his assessment, describing Castleford’s current form as “unacceptable” for a club of its stature and history. He believes that without immediate changes at the coaching level, the Tigers risk spiraling even further.
“Now more than ever, Castleford need to act fast,” Wilkin urged. “They must go for the best coach available. Someone with a clear philosophy, authority, and the respect to pull this team together. The season is slipping away, but it can still be salvaged—if the right call is made soon.”
Wilkin’s comments have divided fans. While some accuse him of being overly harsh, others admit that his concerns are becoming difficult to ignore. Castleford’s inconsistency, lack of structure on the field, and visible frustration among players are issues that have been evident for weeks.
Supporter Neil Thomason, a lifelong Tigers fan, shared his concerns:
“At first I thought Wilkin was just being critical as usual, but he’s right. We’ve been papering over cracks for too long. We need change, and we need it now.”
