Brisbane Broncos winger Corey Oates has quashed rumours of any potential rift between him and coach Kevin Walters.

Brisbane Broncos’ winger, Corey Oates, has addressed and dismissed rumors hinting at discord between him and coach Kevin Walters. Speculation arose when Oates was omitted from the Broncos’ lineup in the initial weeks of the season, and subsequently, he didn’t feature in the Queensland Cup matches.

According to reports, some suggested Oates refused to play in the reserve grade after being sidelined for Deine Mariner. However, Walters chose Mariner alongside Jesse Arthars, while Selwyn Cobbo shifted to the centers after Herbie Farnworth’s departure to the Dolphins. Oates was later reinstated in the team, playing as a second-rower against the North Queensland Cowboys.

Addressing the speculations, Oates clarified that his absence from reserve grade was due to managing a knee condition, a concern he discussed with Walters. He explained that both he and Walters agreed on managing the issue through rest and training rather than playing in the QLD Cup.

Oates emphasized the need to prioritize his physical well-being and expressed gratitude for the coach’s understanding and support. Despite the challenges, Oates remains committed to seizing opportunities when they arise and contributing effectively to the team.

At 29 years old with over 200 NRL games, Oates is now considered a veteran player. He acknowledges the likelihood of playing out of his usual position to support the team due to the shortage of second-row players in the Broncos’ squad. With Kurt Capewell’s departure and limited support for Brendan Piakura and Jordan Riki, players like Jaiyden Hunt, Patrick Carrigan, and Xavier Willison have been rotated in the position.

Oates’ robust running game, averaging 184 meters per game in the previous season, makes him a valuable asset for the Broncos. Despite not frequently scoring tries, Oates consistently delivers in terms of meter gains, a trend observed throughout his career.
