Tom Huddlestone, the first team coach, left for League One rivals Birmingham City, according to Shaun Maloney, saying it “came out of the blue.”
The 37-year-old left his role with Manchester United’s Under-21 team and only became a member of Maloney’s coaching staff in June.
The day before the Latics team returned for preseason training, Stephen Crainey, a local rival, left for Bolton Wanderers. Huddlestone, who was born in Nottingham, was brought in to take his place.
“Tom informed me that they had approached him when we spoke on the bus on Friday morning on our way to Bristol Rovers. We’ve been friends for a long time, and this won’t make me feel any differently about him or our friendship. I still think highly of Tom as a coach and a man, and I shall miss him. Despite his short stay of a few months, it was rather emotional to say goodbye.
“We’ve lately lost a few employees in this way, but the upside is it proves we have decent individuals working here. Regretfully, we were unable to retain him.”
