On Wednesday, the Big 12 conference announced its 2024 Volleyball preseason poll and league awards, determined by votes from the league’s head coaches. TCU outside hitter Melanie Parra was named the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year, marking the first time a Horned Frog has received this honor.
Coming off a unanimous First Team All-Big 12 season in 2023, Melanie Parra delivered one of the most remarkable individual performances in Horned Frog history. She twice recorded 34 kills in regular season victories over Florida State and Texas Tech, and added 37 total kills during the NCAA Tournament as TCU advanced to the Round of 32 for the second consecutive year. Parra’s league-leading averages of 5.17 points per set and 4.38 kills per set make her the top returning player in these categories.
Parra is joined on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team by junior outside hitter Jalyn Gibson. In 2023, Gibson ranked second on the team with 337 kills and 24 service aces, and was among the top three in both digs and blocks. She also delivered a standout performance in TCU’s NCAA Tournament victory over Florida State, contributing 17 kills and two aces to help defeat the Seminoles.
