In a groundbreaking announcement that has sent waves across the hockey world, the National Hockey League (NHL) has confirmed it will honour Alex Ovechkin with a first-of-its-kind commemorative trophy in recognition of his extraordinary achievement as the all-time leading goal scorer in NHL history. The presentation will take place in a special ceremony later this season, marking a historic moment not only in Ovechkin’s career but also in the league’s storied history.
After surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s iconic record of 894 goals, Ovechkin now sits at the top of the NHL goal-scoring chart—a feat many once believed was impossible in the modern era of the game. This new trophy, specially crafted for the occasion, will symbolize his relentless pursuit of greatness, resilience, and unmatched consistency over two decades of elite performance.
According to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, the league wanted to do more than just acknowledge the milestone with a typical plaque or in-game mention. Instead, the league has created a custom, one-of-a-kind trophy that will be unveiled and awarded to Ovechkin during an official presentation at Capital One Arena, home of the Washington Capitals.
“This is a milestone unlike any other in our game’s history,” Bettman stated. “Alex Ovechkin’s achievement deserves a tribute as historic and unique as the record itself. This trophy is a celebration of his legacy, and we are proud to present it to him in front of the fans who’ve cheered him on every step of the way.”
The trophy, crafted by the same artisans behind the Stanley Cup’s restoration, features a golden hockey stick curving into the shape of the number ‘895’—the figure that initially marked Ovechkin’s record-breaking goal. At the base, a detailed timeline chronicles his most significant goals, from his first NHL score in 2005 to the one that rewrote the record books.
Engraved into the metal are the names of his teammates and coaches throughout the years—acknowledging the collective journey of the Capitals franchise alongside their captain.
The NHL has confirmed that this award will remain exclusive to Ovechkin, making it a permanent part of league lore and a one-time honour, underscoring the rarity of the feat.
Ovechkin’s Response: “This Is Beyond Special”
Ovechkin, speaking during a media availability, expressed his gratitude and emotion upon hearing the news.

“This is beyond special,” he said. “I’ve always focused on playing hard, giving everything for my team, and chasing the Cup. Breaking the record was something I never thought about early in my career. To be honoured like this by the NHL, it’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
He went on to dedicate the achievement to his family, teammates, fans, and the entire Capitals organization. “I didn’t get here alone. This is our moment—mine, my family’s, and the fans in D.C. who believed in me from the beginning.”
The ceremony is expected to draw NHL legends, current players, and celebrities from across the sports world. A tribute video featuring messages from past greats, including Wayne Gretzky himself, will be aired in the arena, followed by the unveiling of the trophy in front of a packed crowd.
Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery praised the NHL’s decision, stating, “Ovi is a once-in-a-lifetime player. He’s changed the way goal scoring is viewed in the game. This honour is perfect for a player of his magnitude.”
As fans eagerly await the date of the ceremony, one thing is certain—Alex Ovechkin’s name is now etched not just in the record books, but in the very fabric of hockey history.
