Collingwood coach Craig McRae will push the club to look at changing how it votes for the Copeland Trophy best and fairest award, after Nick Daicos finished second.
At the Pies’ awards night, McRae quipped that Daicos might finally win a Brownlow with “a few more 16-disposal games”, in reference to him finishing runner-up to Matt Rowell – who confusingly polled in some below-average games on route to victory.
Hours later, Daicos finished runner-up at his own club, polling 315 votes behind ruckman Darcy Cameron, who won with 328.
The Magpies’ best and fairest sees five coaches give between zero and four votes to each player for every game, with a maximum of 20 per game.
McRae now believes the system needs to be looked at.
“The process is in place, but I always want to challenge them,” he told Seven.
“I think Darcy Cameron is a great winner, but I’d look at the process and there were times where I think Nick probably could’ve got more votes here and there.
“I’ll make sure, with the position I’m in, that I’ll be able to ask the right questions of the right people and make the necessary changes where we think there need to be.”
Daicos has finished on the Brownlow podium for three consecutive years.
His 98 votes between 2023-25 are the most ever recorded across a three-year period without the player actually winning a Brownlow.
