Roje Stona achieved a historic victory by winning Jamaica’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in the men’s discus at the Paris Games. Stona set an Olympic record with a throw of 70.00 meters, surpassing the previous record of 69.89 meters set by Lithuania’s Virgilijus Alekna at the Athens 2004 Games.
He finished just three centimeters ahead of Lithuanian world record holder Mykolas Alekna, who took silver, while Australian Matthew Denny won bronze with a throw of 69.31 meters.
Stona expressed his excitement, saying, “I was very hyped. I wanted to bring it down, calm myself, regroup and go again.” He added that his first three throws were not ideal, but his final attempt was a great throw that allowed him to make history.
