The Dragons have confirmed one of their long-time supporters was ejected from Kogarah Oval on Saturday for an alleged homophobic slur directed at referee Peter Gough.
St George Illawarra were trailing Melbourne 8-6 at halftime when Gough was walking off the field and got abused by the Dragons fan.
“He yelled out ‘Gough, you are a f—ing cheating [redacted homophobic slur] and the referee stopped, looked him eye to eye, and then alerted security,” a Dragons official told WWOS.
“They didn’t muck around – they threw him straight out of the ground.
“It was quite surprising because the guy concerned is a long-time Dragons fan who has been coming to games for years.”
The club have referred the incident to the NRL Integrity Unit and also released a statement on Monday condemning the behaviour.
“The Dragons are aware of an incident in the round four match at Jubilee Stadium in which a patron was ejected for using inappropriate language,” the statement said.
“The club has notified the NRL integrity unit and will now work with all relevant parties on next steps. As always, the Dragons condemn the use of abusive or discriminatory language or any other behaviour that makes anyone at our games feel unsafe.”
The incident comes just weeks after the Dragons released a statement condemning “anti-social behaviour” at Kogarah Oval during their Round 1 clash against the Bulldogs.
Footage circulated on social media following the game which depicted a man wearing a Dragons jersey throwing a pie at a Bulldogs fan.
Following an investigation, the man who allegedly threw the pie is now set to front court.
