Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales admitted Monday there’s a chance second-year quarterback Bryce Young doesn’t suit up in the preseason.
“There could be,” Canales said. “I keep going back and forth with that because there’s some value to just allowing him to play with [center] Austin [Corbett] and then there’s also the flipside of which we know. We’re counting on those guys and that’s another approach too. Different teams have different philosophies for how they do that. So, that’s something I’ve kind of been resting with.
As Canales mentioned, the upside to allowing Young to get some snaps, is getting the chance to work with Corbett. The 28-year-old missed 12 games this past season, meaning he seldom worked with Young. The Panthers open up their preseason on Thursday against the New England Patriots.
The 2023 No. 1 overall pick out of Alabama, Young led the Panthers to just two wins in his 16 starts during his rookie campaign. He threw for 2,877 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on 59.8% passing.
While not ideal, Carolina certainly isn’t giving up on Young. The Panthers underwent wholesale changes on their coaching staff, notably hiring Canales, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator, as head coach.
