The rivalry between Sunderland and Coventry City supporters intensified over the course of the 2024/25 Championship campaign and has continued into the summer.
Sunderland and Coventry City supporters, although the two cities are 200 miles apart, share a fierce rivalry that has reached a boiling point in recent months.
The Black Cats beat the Sky Blues in the Championship play-off semi-finals across two legs, with Dan Ballard scoring a dramatic last-minute header, which spawned scenes of carnage in the Stadium of Light stands.
Before the play-offs, Sunderland held a worrying head-to-head record against Coventry, having not won against them before this second tier season since 2007.
Now, that historical rivalry between the two clubs has spilled over into the transfer debate regarding Jack Rudoni and a certain Sunderland star who looks poised to depart.
Sunderland’s rivalry against Coventry began in 1977, when former Sky Blues owner Jimmy Hill controversially delayed kick-off at Coventry on the final day, which led to Sunderland’s relegation.
This season, Frank Lampard’s side missed out on the Wembley play-off final after falling to a late defeat at the Stadium of Light against the eventual winners.
Now, the rivalry has continued into the summer transfer window, and is now centered around sections of the Sky Blues fanbase believing that Rudoni is a far better player than Jobe Bellingham, who is poised for a £25m-£30m Bundesliga move as Borussia Dortmund talks continue.
EFL Analysis understands that Coventry “will sell” Rudoni in the summer transfer window, as Premier League clubs show interest in the midfielder and Sheffield United are also looking at Rudoni.
In light of the links, one Sunderland podcast (SensibleSAFC) wound up sections of the Sky Blues fanbase on social media, by falsely claiming that the Black Cats have submitted and had accepted a £3.5m for Rudoni.
Many Coventry fans replied to the jibe, claiming that “Bellingham isn’t fit to lace Rudoni’s boots”, and one claiming that “If Jobe Bellingham is worth that much… then Jack Rudoni is worth £50m.
The final post within the Sunderland podcast’s spree of wind-ups falsely claimed that Dortmund have submitted a bid of £55m for Rudoni, dwarfing their submitted fee for Bellingham, in reference to how highly Coventry fans rate him over the Black Cats midfielder.
Despite the footballing rivalry, when analysising the statistics of the two players, there is one second tier starlet that stands out.

Particularly since Lampard’s arrival, Rudoni was in splendid form throughout this season, finishing the 24/25 campaign with ten goals and 12 assists in the league from attacking midfield, with his final goal coming as the equaliser in the play-off semi-final first leg against Sunderland.
Sky Blues fans were not happy about potentially losing their 10-goal midfielder, and rightly so given how important he’d be to the club’s promotion push next season.
In a slightly deeper role, Bellingham has been a pivotal part of Regis Le Bris’ play-off winning squad, and was honoured as the Championship Young Player of the Season and included in the league’s Team of the Year for his exploits.
