Former Manchester United winger Daniel James has found himself at the center of a social media storm after making comments that many Red Devils supporters have interpreted as a veiled criticism of the club and its fanbase.
In a recent interview that has since gone viral, the Welsh international openly praised Leeds United supporters, calling them the most passionate and supportive fanbase he has experienced in his career. While the statement appeared to be a heartfelt appreciation for his current club, a particular portion of his remarks has drawn heavy backlash from Manchester United fans.
“Some big-club fans don’t know how to behave or support players,” James said. “You play one bad game and they’re after you straight away. But at Leeds, they get behind you no matter what. That’s what every player needs — genuine support.”
The remarks, though not directly naming Manchester United, were widely perceived as a pointed criticism of his time at Old Trafford. James joined Manchester United from Swansea City in 2019 with much promise but struggled to cement a regular starting spot. He eventually left for Leeds United in 2021 after a mixed spell at United.
The reaction from United fans has been swift and furious. Many took to X (formerly Twitter) and other platforms to express their anger and disappointment, branding James as disrespectful and ungrateful.
“He’s an idiot,” wrote one furious fan.
“Ungrateful clown. Manchester United gave him the biggest platform of his career,” another responded.
“The worst to ever play for us. Who does he think he is?” added a third.
James, now 26, has enjoyed a resurgence at Leeds United, becoming a key figure in their attacking line-up. However, his latest remarks have certainly burned some bridges with a large portion of the Manchester United faithful, many of whom now view his time at Old Trafford with disdain.
What seems to have added fuel to the fire is the timing of his comments, with United fans already on edge following a turbulent season and ongoing debates about the club’s direction. For many, James’ comments felt like unnecessary provocation at a sensitive moment.
So far, James has not issued a clarification or response to the backlash. However, the fallout from his comments may linger, especially with the fierce rivalry between Leeds United and Manchester United never far from boiling point.
Whether intended as a dig or not, Daniel James’ words have reignited old tensions and drawn sharp lines between past loyalties and present pride.
