The search to find Simone McKinnis’ replacement at the Melbourne Vixens is heating up, with a club great admitting there’s been “a few phone calls” about the soon-to-be vacant head coach role.
It was on May 18 when McKinnis stunned the netball world by announcing 2025 would be her last at the helm of the Vixens after 13 seasons.
Speaking on Fox Netball, Netball Victoria general manager of high performance and pathways Sharelle McMahon said the search for the Vixens’ new coach was ongoing.
Speculation is mounting that club legend Bianca Chatfield could be the one to take the reins.
A source close to Chatfield, who asked to remain anonymous, revealed that the former captain has been contacted regarding the soon-to-be vacant role.
“There’s been a few phone calls,” the source quoted Chatfield as saying. “When people reach out about the Vixens, it’s something you can’t ignore. That club is a huge part of her life.”
The news comes as the Vixens face the challenge of replacing McKinnis, who guided the team to multiple championships during her 11-year tenure and helped shape the club’s culture into one of professionalism, resilience, and success.
Chatfield, 42, is one of the most respected figures in Australian netball. She spent over a decade playing for the Vixens, captaining them to their first premiership in 2009 and earning a reputation as a fierce competitor and natural leader.
