“They Got the Luck, But We Were Better” – Gareth Ainsworth Fumes After Gills’ Painful EFL Cup Penalty Shootout Defeat to AFC Wimbledon
Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth could not hide his frustration after watching his side crash out of the EFL Cup on penalties to AFC Wimbledon at Priestfield, despite believing his team were the better side on the day.
“Great credit to the boys. It doesn’t feel like we’ve been knocked out of the cup,” Ainsworth said after the match. “Result aside, that performance will be good enough if we play like that in League Two.”
The Gills pushed hard throughout the contest, creating numerous chances and dominating key moments, but failed to find the decisive goal in regulation time. With the game going to a penalty shootout, fortune ultimately favoured Wimbledon, leaving Ainsworth feeling hard done by.
“Losing to a team which, on the day, we were better than is a bit frustrating,” the Gills boss admitted. “They got the luck, but we were better.”
Despite the disappointment, Ainsworth is confident his side can take positives from the display into their League Two campaign, insisting the effort and performance levels shown will bring results in the coming weeks.
