Netball Victoria has confirmed Di Honey as the new head coach of reigning Suncorp Super Netball champions, the Melbourne Vixens — a move that has received the glowing endorsement of outgoing coach Simone McKinnis OAM.
Honey, a former Australian Diamond, edged out a world-class shortlist of candidates from both Australia and overseas to land one of the most prestigious coaching jobs in netball. She replaces McKinnis, who stepped down at the end of the 2025 season after a remarkable 13 years in charge, during which she led the Vixens to three premierships in 2014, 2020 and 2025.
Speaking on the transition, McKinnis revealed that she was consulted about her successor and had no hesitation in putting forward Honey’s name. “I was asked for my opinion on which direction to take, and for me there was no better candidate than Di,” McKinnis said. “We spoke, I told her how much I believe in her and her abilities, and I know she will bring more success to this club.”
Honey has been a central figure in the Vixens’ coaching setup since 2014, serving as McKinnis’ assistant throughout her tenure and playing a vital role in each of the team’s three championship triumphs. Her appointment represents continuity, something McKinnis believes is key to sustaining the Vixens’ dominance.
“I felt what this club needs is continuity, not straying away from what has given us so much success,” McKinnis added. “I feel fulfilled knowing the team is in very good hands.”
For Honey, the appointment marks a new chapter and an opportunity to carry forward the legacy built by her mentor. For the Vixens, it signals stability, confidence, and renewed hope for more silverware in the years to come.
