The Canberra Raiders are wasting no time in securing their future, with the club launching formal talks to lock down emerging fullback Kaeo Weekes on a long-term deal.
Weekes, who has quickly risen through the ranks to become one of the most exciting young fullbacks in the NRL, has caught the eye with his electric speed, evasive footwork, and game-changing instincts. At just 22 years old, the former Manly Sea Eagles junior has already shown flashes of brilliance that suggest a big future lies ahead.
After a series of strong performances in the 2024 season, Raiders coach Ricky Stuart and club management are reportedly eager to secure Weekes’ signature before rival clubs come calling.
“We’re trying to sign the young guys up,” Stuart said after training on Monday. “Kaeo has really impressed us—not just with his skill, but with his attitude and hunger to grow. He’s the kind of player you can build around.”
Weekes was handed the No. 1 jersey earlier in the season following injuries in the Raiders’ backline, and he hasn’t looked back. His breakout performance against the Titans, where he notched a try, three tackle busts, and 150 run metres, cemented his place as a fan favourite and reliable starter.
“I feel like I’m just getting started,” Weekes told local media. “The boys here have been unreal. There’s a great culture at the club, and I’d love to stay and keep building something special with this group.”
The Raiders, traditionally known for their gritty, physical style of play, have made a concerted effort in recent years to add youth and speed to their backline. Weekes fits that mold perfectly—explosive on kick returns, elusive in broken play, and level-headed under pressure.
NRL commentator Michael Ennis praised Weekes’ recent form on Fox League: “Kaeo Weekes has that X-factor. He’s still learning, but every time he touches the ball, you feel something can happen. Locking him in long-term is a smart move for Canberra.”
With Weekes off-contract at the end of the 2025 season, the Raiders are reportedly preparing a three-year extension that would keep him in lime green through 2028. While formal terms are yet to be finalised, both sides appear eager to come to an agreement quickly and avoid any off-season bidding wars.
The move reflects a broader strategy from the Raiders to retain their home-grown and developing talent amid an increasingly competitive market. Alongside Weekes, the club is also in discussions with other rising stars to ensure a solid foundation for the years ahead.
As Canberra continues its push toward finals footy, keeping core players like Weekes onboard will be crucial to their long-term ambitions.
