Wrexham appear to be favouring experience in the summer transfer window, with many of their supposed targets sitting “the wrong side of 30”.
On the back of three successive promotions, which have lifted the club into the Championship, the Red Dragons are looking to further bolster their ranks. Premier League pedigree is being sought by manager Phil Parkinson.
A number of proven top-flight performers, including Tom Cairney and Jamie Vardy, have seen moves to SToK Racecourse speculated on. Tottenham defender Ben Davies is among the latest to generate transfer talk.
The 32-year-old Wales international could be a shrewd addition for Wrexham, but players of his ilk – that have graced the World Cup and Champions League – are expected to attract plenty of interest and would command big wages.
WHAT EFL PUNDIT SAID
Reacting to the recruitment rumours coming out of North Wales, former EFL player turned pundit Don Goodman told Football League World: “It seems every player that Wrexham are linked with seems to be the wrong side of 30, but at 32-years-old, and with all that experience, I can understand the appeal of Ben Davies.
“He’s a player that’s looked after himself, so he’s still probably got a few years left. Would he want to drop to the Championship? Maybe. He’s only started 14 Premier League games last season and 12 the season before, so from his personal perspective, he is now at an age where he needs to be playing football week in and week out, and a club like Wrexham would give him that opportunity.
“It may be a case, though, that he may get better offers, with respect to Wrexham, so we’ll wait and see.”
Wrexham, with Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney funding the most ambitious of projects, are hoping to get fresh faces on board before heading to Australia and New Zealand for a pre-season tour.
