In a highly charged press conference on Tuesday, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell delivered a passionate update on the team’s preparations for the 2024 NFL season. As the Lions approach the final stages of their preseason, Campbell emphasized the critical balance between refining their first team and assessing backup players ahead of their upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Campbell outlined that the Lions have just two practices remaining before shifting their focus entirely to the Steelers. This period is crucial for internal improvements and player evaluations. “Over the next two days, one today, one tomorrow, and then it really be getting ready for Pittsburgh after that,” Campbell stated. “So we’re still Detroit versus Detroit. We got things we need to get better at and we’ll do that.”
The head coach stressed the need to balance preparation for the season opener with the development of backup players, who will play a significant role in the preseason finale. This approach ensures that while the main players are being fine-tuned, lesser-known players also get the chance to showcase their skills. Campbell highlighted the importance of giving opportunities to players like Donovan Peoples-Jones, Daurice Fountain, and Kaden Davis, especially in the wide receiver positions. This evaluation process is integral to making informed roster decisions without neglecting the development of emerging talent.
With several roster spots still up for grabs, Campbell urged players to capitalize on their chances to secure a place on the final roster. “We’re looking for players who consistently show improvement,” Campbell noted. He praised Chris Smith for his dedication and reliability, describing him as someone who consistently performs the “dirty work” and executes his responsibilities.
Injuries have been a concern for the Lions, but Campbell provided a positive outlook on the situation. While some players may take longer to return, he expressed confidence that key figures like Jahmyr Gibbs, Dan Skipper, and Kevin Zeitler are expected to be back for the Steelers game. Campbell remains optimistic about their recovery and plans to reintegrate them into the team’s preparation as the season opener approaches.
Kalif Raymond, known for his dual role as a wide receiver and return specialist, will have his workload managed to maximize his effectiveness in both areas. Campbell acknowledged the need to preserve Raymond’s energy for key moments throughout the season.
The Lions’ quarterback situation is also under scrutiny as the team considers the potential need to keep three quarterbacks on the roster due to injury concerns. While Hendon Hooker, a former Heisman candidate, requires more time and practice to develop, Nate Sudfeld currently holds an advantage due to his better acclimation with the team. Campbell emphasized the importance of giving Hooker significant playing time in the upcoming game to assess his readiness, despite some mixed performances in previous preseason games.
