Justin Madubuike’s recent lucrative contract extension with the Baltimore Ravens has not only brought immense joy to Madubuike himself but has also sparked keen interest from Christian Wilkins, who anticipates a substantial payday as he positions himself as the premier free-agent defensive tackle on the market. As reported by ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss, the Arizona Cardinals are poised to prioritize Wilkins as a top target as soon as free agency commences.

However, Weinfuss highlights the possibility that Wilkins might command a higher salary than the Cardinals are prepared to offer. Consequently, they are considering alternative options such as Leonard Williams, DJ Reader, Grover Stewart, or Sheldon Rankins to bolster their defensive line.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Madubuike sealed a lucrative four-year contract worth $98 million with the Ravens, securing $75.5 million in guaranteed compensation. This deal catapults Madubuike to the pinnacle as the highest-paid defensive tackle based on total value and ranks him second in terms of average annual salary, just behind Aaron Donald’s staggering $31.7 million per annum with the Los Angeles Rams.

Spotrac’s projected market value estimates a potential four-year contract for Wilkins valued at nearly $81 million, a figure well within the Cardinals’ financial capabilities considering their substantial cap space of $51.8 million.

While Madubuike outperformed Wilkins in terms of sacks last season, registering 13 compared to Wilkins’ nine, Wilkins demonstrated his prowess by ranking 13th in ESPN’s pass-rush win rate among all defensive tackles, a metric where Madubuike did not crack the top 20.

One notable contrast between Madubuike and Wilkins lies in their ages. While Wilkins, who turned 28 on December 20, is not considered old, he is almost two years older than Madubuike, who celebrated his 26th birthday on November 17.

Madubuike is currently on an upward trajectory, showcasing the best season of his career, whereas Wilkins also achieved career-high statistics in sacks and quarterback hits with 23. However, there is speculation that Wilkins may have reached his peak performance level, despite his significant impact potential, as demonstrated by his impressive numbers compared to other Cardinals defensive tackles like Dante Stills, who led the team with 3.5 sacks last season.
