Lions ‘Natural Fit’ for $97 Million CB After Cameron Sutton Release

During this offseason, the Detroit Lions have fortified their cornerback position by acquiring two free agents and securing contract extensions for two existing players. However, the release of Cameron Sutton has left them potentially seeking another starting cornerback. Among the available options, Marshon Lattimore of the New Orleans Saints stands out as an enticing prospect.

According to analysis by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Lattimore is among four seasoned cornerbacks the Lions could consider pursuing. Birkett notes that due to cap constraints, the Saints might not be able to trade Lattimore until later in the spring, but Detroit could present a logical destination for him. Lattimore has prior experience playing under Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn during his initial four seasons in the NFL. Despite being hampered by injuries, including missing 17 games over the last two seasons, Lattimore remains a sought-after talent.

In September 2021, Lattimore inked a lucrative 5-year, $97.6 million extension, leaving him with three years left on his current deal. This substantial contract will undoubtedly influence any potential trade negotiations between the Saints and interested parties like the Lions. Additionally, concerns regarding Lattimore’s injury history, such as a lacerated kidney in 2022 and an ankle injury sidelining him for the final seven games of 2023, may impact trade discussions.

Despite his recent injury setbacks, Lattimore showcased his defensive prowess in the ten games he participated in last season. Accumulating 48 combined tackles, including two tackles for loss, alongside eight pass defenses and one interception, he demonstrated his value on the field. As the Lions weigh their options for bolstering their cornerback corps, Lattimore emerges as a compelling candidate, offering both pedigree and potential contributions to their defensive lineup.
