Leeds United’s pursuit of Ajax winger Carlos Forbs has hit a roadblock, as the Dutch club reportedly rejected the Premier League side’s attempt to secure the young talent on loan. This news comes at a challenging time for Leeds, who have struggled at the start of the season and faced mounting pressure to bolster their squad.
Leeds United’s campaign began with a disappointing 3-3 draw at home against Portsmouth, followed by a goalless stalemate against West Bromwich Albion. The results have left fans disheartened and increased scrutiny on manager Daniel Farke, who is under pressure to lead the team to promotion after falling short last season.
The current transfer window has not been kind to Leeds, with the club having already lost key players including Glen Kamara, Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville, and Georginio Rutter. The absence of these players has left a noticeable gap in the squad, and the club has yet to make significant reinforcements.
In an attempt to address their needs, Leeds approached Ajax regarding a loan move for Carlos Forbs, a highly rated Portuguese winger who joined the Dutch side last summer. HITC reports that Leeds’ proposal was met with resistance, as Ajax appears unwilling to let Forbs leave on a temporary basis.
Forbs, who made a notable impact in his debut season with Ajax, featured in 34 matches and contributed with four goals and five assists. His performances have only continued to impress this season, with five appearances already under his belt, including four in Europa League qualifying.
The 20-year-old’s career trajectory has been nothing short of impressive. After signing from Manchester City for £12 million, Forbs showcased his potential by scoring 21 goals and providing 11 assists in just 24 appearances for City’s youth team. His prowess was further evident in the EFL Trophy and UEFA Youth League, where he demonstrated remarkable goal-scoring abilities and playmaking skills.
Given Forbs’ significant contribution to Ajax’s squad and his potential, it is understandable why the Dutch club is reluctant to part with him, even temporarily. Ajax’s refusal highlights their confidence in Forbs’ role within their plans and their reluctance to disrupt a promising young talent’s development.
In addition to Forbs, Leeds United have been exploring other winger options as they seek to replace the departed Summerville, who joined West Ham. The club has been linked with several potential targets, including Norwich City’s Jonathan Rowe. However, Rowe now seems set for a move to Marseille, narrowing Leeds’ options further. Another name reportedly on Leeds’ radar is Jack Clarke of Sunderland, but the Championship club’s asking price of at least £25 million poses a significant hurdle.
As the transfer window approaches its final weeks, Leeds United’s ownership faces increasing pressure to make impactful signings. The club’s fans are eager for fresh talent to reinvigorate the squad and address the gaps left by departing players. With critical decisions ahead, Leeds must act decisively to ensure they can compete effectively and maintain fan support through this pivotal period.
