Sheffield Wednesday have set a record they would rather have avoided. The Championship’s bottom-placed team extended their winless streak to 36 matches, drawing 1-1 against Leicester. Since the creation of the English professional league in 1888, only one other club has experienced such a dismal run.
This refers to Derby County, who had gone through a similar drought between September 2007 and August 2008. But as early as next weekend, Sheffield Wednesday could become the sole holder of this sad record: the Owls travel on Saturday to face league leaders Coventry.
Eighteen points deducted before the season
The season has turned into a nightmare. Even before kickoff, the club had been penalized with an 18-point deduction due to its financial difficulties. Forty-one matches later, it still occupies last place with… -5 points, nearly 50 points behind second-to-last Oxford.
Sheffield Wednesday’s last victory dates back to September 20, 2025 against Portsmouth. Since then, they have suffered 26 defeats and managed only nine draws.
In the history of club football, this streak is reminiscent of SC Tasmania 1900 Berlin’s 31-match winless run during the 1965/1966 Bundesliga season. However, the world record across all categories belongs to a national team: Andorra, which went 86 matches without a victory between November 2004 and November 2016.
